" Nearly Gone"

It was the worst of times,
I could honestly say,
Mortgage so far behind,
Impossible to pay,

Over across town,
In that big factory of brick,
My job of 18 years,
Gave me the pink slip,

The love of my life,
Took the baby and walked,
She never looked back,
Refusal to talk,

With a bottle of vodka,
I drowned my sorrows that day,
Then it became clear,
How to take the pain away,

On my way to the closet,
Finding a reason to stop,
I reached for the top,
And grabbed my 9mm glock,

On the empty livingroom floor,
I took one more drink,
Thought about my baby,
And what my mother would think,

Slowly pulled back the slide,
Cold barrel under my chin,
I then apologized,
For this ultimate sin,

As I started to squeeze,
the trigger, I froze,
A warm soothing light,
From the corner arose,

A warm soothing voice,
Began to speak to my soul,
” My son, why do you
fear growing old?”

” Life is something,
you do not posess”,
” It is a wonderful thing,
you share with the rest”,

” Dont toss it away,
when you want it no longer,
For these trying times,
are making you stronger”,

” And if you go on, trust,
this I will say,
For you things will be great,
In unbelievable ways”,

As fast as it came,
Then it was gone,
A tear fell from my eye,
Perhaps I was wrong,

I will go on,
And set down the gun,
Threw open the curtains,
And felt the warm sun,

Seemed like yesterday,
Forever greatful indeed,
Thank you whomever,
From my family and me...
